As society evolves, laws must evolve with it. Unfortunately, when it comes to family laws—especially alimony and maintenance—our legal framework still stereotypes. Lawmakers and courts continues to view women as lifelong dependents on a husband’s income, despite the reality that today’s women are educated, employed, and financially independent.

Ironically, while governments run hundreds of schemes aimed at women’s financial empowerment, the legal system still assumes dependency at the time of marital breakdown. This contradiction raises a serious question: Is the law truly empowering women, or is it preserving outdated assumptions?

“This is dependency not empowerment”, Kumar S Ratan

This blog argues for a much-needed reform – Provision of Zero Alimony for Short-Term Marriages.

Today’s Time

Women participate actively in the workforce

Remarriage is increasingly common and socially accepted

Financial independence is no longer an exception

Still our laws function as if every marriage permanently disables a woman’s ability to earn. On contrary that short term marriages which has lasted in few months or in few years, has no much impact on spouse finance, it do not have any significant impact on their career.

Provision of alimony in short marriages often turn into:

A pressure tactic during divorce negotiations

A means of financial extortion

A tool to harass not just the husband, but also his family

This misuse of process of law does not protect women—but it damages the credibility of genuine cases and destroys families through prolonged legal conflict.

Empowerment Vs Permanent Dependency

If a woman is capable to manage business or corporate life are also capable of rebuilding their lives, like men. Allowing women to get a lifetime alimony from husband is like making them permanent dependent on their ex-husband’s hard earned money.

So where there is dependency there is no empowerment, we believe.

Zero Alimony is Justice

Demanding Zero Alimony for short-term marriages is not anti-women. It is pro-justice, pro-equality, and pro-reform.

Laws must protect the vulnerable—but they must also prevent misuse. Law must reflect current social realities, not outdated stereotypes.

While India celebrates reforms that promote the ease of doing business, men continue to live under suspicion in their homes. This article explores the liberty gap that denies men trust, empathy, and emotional freedom in family life.

Ease of Doing Business vs. Ease of Being a Man

India takes pride in climbing the Ease of Doing Business rankings. Simplified regulations, single-window approvals, and digital governance reflect a belief that trust empowers people. When citizens are free from unnecessary control, the economy flourishes.

Yet this principle of liberty halts at the home’s threshold. Men are trusted in boardrooms but doubted in bedrooms.

In family disputes, the same government that trusts businessmen with billions doesn’t trust men with fairness. A single allegation can shatter reputations and lives. The presumption of guilt shadows men even before the first hearing begins.

The Pressure to Be Politically Correct

Modern men live under constant watch. Every word, reaction, or pause is examined through a gendered lens.

Express anger → “toxic.”

Stay silent → “indifferent.”

Assert a boundary → “controlling.”

Defend themselves → “insensitive.”

“Men must always be politically correct—not because they’re wrong, but because society expects them to be wrong.”, Kumar S Ratan

Meanwhile, women’s expressions of emotion are hailed as empowerment. Men’s expressions are viewed as aggression. This double standard suffocates authenticity and destroys genuine communication in relationships.

The Liberty Gap

India liberated its markets, not its men.
There are reforms for start-ups but none for fathers, husbands, or sons.

A businessman who fails is called “innovative.”
A husband who fails to please is called “abusive.”

Family courts and social norms have tilted so far that men must prove their innocence to earn basic respect. Fathers struggle for visitation; husbands fight stigma more than cases. The system meant for protection has turned punitive for one gender.

The Human Cost

This constant vigilance breaks men silently.
They suppress emotions, withdraw socially, and internalize guilt.
Mental-health issues among men—depression, anxiety, suicide—are rarely treated as a national concern, even though they stem from emotional injustice and societal neglect.

Time for Social Reform

India needs not only economic freedom but emotional freedom for men.

Just as we measure the Ease of Doing Business, let us measure the Ease of Being a Man.
Let it reflect:

Fairness in laws

Respect for men’s human rights and fathers’ rights

Recognition of men’s mental health

Equal empathy in family courts

Because a nation that ignores the well-being of its men cannot build healthy families—and without strong families, no economy can sustain growth.

Closing Thought

Ease of doing business strengthened India’s economy.
Now, we must strengthen its families by creating an Ease of Being a Man Reform.

A man trusted in the boardroom should not be broken in the courtroom.
He should not have to be politically correct to be respected— only human to be understood.

For decades, we lived in a world where the narrative about gender was one-sided.

Whatever we knew about gender-based violence and oppression came only from what mainstream media, textbooks, Bollywood, and activist campaigns wanted us to believe. Stories about men being harassed, abused, or even killed were almost never told. The truth was buried under layers of propaganda.

Today, the rise of social media has changed that. Incidents of men’s harassment, abuse by women, and even cases where women have killed their husbands or abused senior citizens are now reaching the public eye—uncensored, unfiltered, and undeniable. But make no mistake—these incidents didn’t suddenly start happening. They have always existed. The difference is that now we have platforms where the truth can bypass the traditional gatekeepers.

The Myth of “Thousands of Years of Oppression”

One of the biggest lies ever sold to society is the feminist narrative that women have been oppressed for thousands of years. This claim has been repeated so often that it has been accepted as unquestionable truth. In reality, our cultural history tells a different story—one where women held a respected, even sacred place in the family and society.

Feminist activists have weaponized this myth to justify gender-biased laws, dismantle traditional family structures, and paint men as the villains of history. Over the last 70–80 years, this narrative has been carefully cultivated in schools, in the media, and even in government policies.

The Role of Bollywood in Male Demonization

Cinema has always been a powerful tool for shaping public opinion. For decades, Bollywood has churned out movies where men are portrayed as violent, cruel, and morally corrupt—while women are shown as eternal victims. These stories have seeped into our subconscious, influencing how society views men.

The result? A society that is quick to believe the worst about men and dismiss their suffering.

The Cost of Propaganda: A Broken Family System

The family system that sustained Indian society for thousands of years has been systematically weakened.

False narratives have created mistrust between men and women.

Laws have been skewed to favor women, often without safeguards against misuse.

Social attitudes have shifted to assume men are guilty until proven innocent.

The damage is visible—rising divorce rates, fatherless children, and increasing cases of depression and suicide among men.

The Truth Is Finally Out

Social media has given men a voice. Incidents that would have been buried in the past are now being discussed openly. People are questioning the old narratives and asking—why were we never told these stories before? Why was the suffering of men ignored?

The fight for truth is not about hating women—it’s about demanding fairness, equality, and an end to the propaganda that has fueled gender-based injustice for decades.

Finally:

The “men are monsters, women are victims” narrative is crumbling under the weight of reality. Thanks to social media, the truth about men’s harassment is finally coming to light. But this is only the beginning—if we want a society based on fairness, we must challenge false narratives, demand gender-neutral laws, and rebuild the trust that has been eroded over generations.

The tragic case of Nishant Tripathi has once again exposed the double standards in our legal and social systems when it comes to men’s rights.

Nishant Tripathi, a 41 years old man with a promising future, ultimately took his own life. What makes this case even more ironic is that his own mother, Neelam Chaturvedi, is a well-known women’s rights activist—yet, even she could not saved her son from the very system she advocated for.

What his mother achieved as a women’s rights activist raises question that “did she truly succeeded as a women’s rights activist”.

The Story of Nishant Tripathi

Nishant accused his wife, Apoorva Parikh, and her aunt, Prarthana Mishra, of pushing him to take the extreme step. The Indian legal system, known for being skewed in favor of women, became a weapon against him. His cries for justice fell on deaf ears. Society, which is quick to believe accusations against men, refused to hear his side of the story.

His mother Neelam Chaturvedi, despite her influence in feminist circles, could not prevent the damage that false allegations and biased laws inflicted on her son. This tragic incident proves what Men’s Rights Activists (MRAs) have been saying for years—men are not just ignored but actively disadvantaged in legal and social systems designed to be “protective” only for women.

“His mother, Neelam Chaturvedi, claims to have ensured justice for 37,000 women. Now, after this incident, she should introspect—did she ensure justice, or did she contribute to the harassment of 37,000 accused men?” says Kumar S. Ratan, founder of Men Helpline.

The Hypocrisy of Gendered Laws

For years, feminists have fought for women’s rights, arguing that women need special protections. But what happens when men need protection? Cases like Nishant’s expose the dangerous misuse of gender-biased laws, where a simple allegation can destroy a man’s career, reputation, and life without the need for substantial evidence.

If a prominent women’s rights activist like Neelam Chaturvedi could not prevent this from happening to her own son, what hope do ordinary men have? This should be a wake-up call for everyone.

Men Also Deserve Justice

False Allegations Ruin Lives – The presumption of guilt against men is destroying innocent lives.

Mental Health and Suicide Rates – Men face extreme emotional and legal pressure but have little support.

Legal Reform is Urgent – Gender-neutral laws are necessary to ensure fairness in justice.

We Call for Change

Men’s rights organizations, including Men Helpline, have been working tirelessly to highlight these issues. We are constantly demanding gender-neutral laws to ensure justice for all, regardless of gender. The Nishant Tripathi, Atul Subhash, Puneet Khurana, Manav Sharma and many more such cases underscores the urgent need to recognize male victims of domestic abuse and provide them with legal safeguards.

The debate is no longer about men versus women but about ensuring fair treatment under the law for every individual. Without urgent legal reforms, more men may continue to suffer in silence, leading to preventable tragedies like Nishant Tripathi’s.

We urge policymakers, activists, and the public to recognize that men, too, are victims of societal and legal oppression. Justice should be for all, not just for one gender.

Are we truly protecting families, or are we dismantling them in the name of justice? If the government and legal system fail to act, India may soon see a complete collapse of its traditional family structure, with marriage becoming an obsolete institution.

The survival of Indian families is at risk amidst one-sided gender-biased laws, which may ultimately lead to their dismantling in the name of justice. Disputes and disagreements are common in human relationships, and Indian families disputes are no exception. No family is perfect, and disagreements naturally arise. In a healthy society, such conflicts are resolved through dialogue, mutual understanding, and, when necessary, legal intervention.

However, when legal frameworks disproportionately criminalize these disputes and apply biased judgments, they threaten the very fabric of relationships. In India, laws related to domestic violence, dowry harassment, and divorce have been criticized for being excessively one-sided in favor of women, often placing men and their families in distress.

This growing legal bias in favor of women, coupled with the criminalization of domestic disputes, is having a profound impact on family dynamics. Many families find themselves fighting legal battles that stretch over years, draining them financially, emotionally, and mentally.

“The time for change is now. Legal reforms must be introduced, and society must demand justice not just for women, but for families as a whole.“, Kumar S Ratan, founder MHO

This article delves into the legal framework that disproportionately favors women, the consequences of these laws on families, and how families can adapt to survive in such an environment.

Biased Law – The law, instead of protecting families, is tearing them apart:

Over the years, several laws have been introduced in India considering the women’s rights. However, the provisions of law and its implementation has resulted in widespread misuse, leaving families devastated.

Laws such as Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code or BNS Section 85 presume the accused guilty until proven innocent, often leading to the arrest of the husband, in-laws and even distant relatives. The Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA), 2005 law provides financial compensation, residence rights and protection orders to women and courts often grant relief to women without sufficient evidence. Similarly women are granted maintenance and alimony under Section 125 CrPC without considering the husband’s income and obligations.

These laws operate under the assumption that men are perpetrators, placing the burden of proof entirely on them. Even when falsely accused men are acquitted, Indian courts often use the term “lack of evidence” instead of declaring them innocent, implying that a crime may have happened, but the woman failed to prove it. This deep-rooted bias is not just in the law but also within the judiciary and lawmakers.

According to a study by the Centre for Social Research (CSR), nearly 80% of dowry harassment cases filed under Section 498A IPC turn out to be false or exaggerated. The Supreme Court of India has termed this misuse as “legal terrorism”, acknowledging the rising number of false cases that destroy families.

Impact on Family Dynamics of such Bias

Criminalisation of family disputes has led to a major change in the Indian family structure. Married men are living in fear, as even a small argument can lead to police intervention and legal troubles and women realise that they have legal power. Women often use these laws to control their spouses or end the marriage on their terms. Such imbalances have shaken the very framework of family.

This has affected the joint family system, other family members do not want to get into unnecessary trouble because of a family member’s bad marriage. This has even affected the lives of children as they are forced to live separately from their fathers due to the dispute.

The Biased Approach in Legal System

Presumption of guilt: Most of these laws assume that men are the aggressors and women are the victims.

No consequences for false allegations: Women who misuse these laws often face no legal repercussions.

Criminalization of Dispute: In cases like 498A or sec 85 of BNS, men and their families can be arrested without investigation.

However, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) studies show that fatherless parenting leads to increased emotional distress and behavioral problems in children. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data (2022) shows that more than 32% of male suicides in India are linked to marital disputes and false accusations.

Survival of Indian Family

To protect families from being torn apart, there is an urgent need to implement fair legal reforms and adopt precautionary measures:

Pre-Nuptial Agreements: Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of spouses in case of divorce or marital dispute.

Electronic Evidence: Keep recordings of conversations and messages to serve as proof in case of false accusations.

Dissolution of IPC 498A / Sec 85 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS): Implement a no-arrest policy and remove the criminalization of family disputes.

Gender-Neutral Domestic Violence Laws: Ensure both men and women are protected without bias.

Strict Action Against False Accusations: Introduce equal punishment for those who file false cases.

The Way Forward: A Call for Balance

The criminalization of family disputes and legal bias against men are destroying the very foundation of Indian families using the laws protecting women became a tool for harassment. It is imperative that India moves towards a balanced, gender-neutral approach where both men and women are protected from abuse, false accusations, and legal exploitation.

It is imperative that India moves towards a balanced, gender-neutral approach, where both men and women are protected from abuse, false accusations, and legal exploitation. A legal system that prioritizes mediation over punishment, imposes strict penalties for false cases, and recognizes the importance of family unity is the need of the hour.

Until such legal reforms are introduced, Indian families must equip themselves with legal awareness, strengthen their internal bonds, and support advocacy efforts for a fair legal system. Only then can we ensure the survival of families and the institution of marriage in India.

Many people ask about reconcile with their wives in family dispute. This process can often feel like walking a double-edged sword. Achieving reconciliation requires patience, thoughtful action, and, at times, legal intervention.

Here is a step-by-step guide to reconcile with wife, may help you navigate this journey:

1. Connect with Family Elders

The first step is to seek help from trusted elders in the family. Elders can provide wisdom, act as mediators, and facilitate conversations that might bridge the gap between you and your wife.

Approach them with sincerity and respect, and explain your desire to reconcile. Many misunderstandings can be resolved with the guidance of experienced family members.

2. Engage a Family Counselor

If discussions within the family do not yield results, it’s time to involve a professional family counselor.

A counselor can provide individual sessions to address personal concerns and joint sessions to foster better understanding between you and your wife.

Counseling often helps identify underlying issues and offers practical solutions for rebuilding the relationship.

3. Seek Social Counseling

In addition to professional counseling, engage with people who can offer social support. Reach out to trusted friends, distant relatives, or extended family members from your wife’s side. They may help mediate and provide a neutral perspective on resolving conflicts.

Social counseling can be an effective way to foster communication and mend broken relationships.

4. File for Restitution of Conjugal Rights (RCR)

If family discussions and counseling fail, you may consider legal action by filing a Restitution of Conjugal Rights (RCR) petition under Section 9 of the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA).

This legal step essentially requests the court to direct your spouse to resume marital cohabitation.

Be mindful that filing an RCR can have legal implications. For instance, your wife may respond by filing a maintenance case. It is advisable to consult a lawyer before taking this step.

5. File for Child Custody Along with RCR

If children are involved, consider filing for child custody along with the RCR. This ensures that you maintain access to your children during the reconciliation process.

Typically, courts can grant you access to your children within 3-4 months, depending on how promptly your petition is heard.

6. When Reconciliation Fails

Sometimes, despite best efforts, reconciliation may not be possible. In few cases, it leads to separation by mutual agreement becomes the next step.

Many husbands tend to pay a lump sum amount to their wives before filing for divorce. However, the right approach is to first file for divorce and specify the amount in the divorce application.

After the filing of divorce case, deposit the agreed amount in court. The woman can claim this amount once the divorce is finalized. This method ensures transparency and legal protection for both parties.

7. Caution: Risk of False 498A Cases

It is important to be cautious, during the process of reconciliation efforts you may be slapped with false 498A case.

Prepare yourself, ensure you maintain clear communication, document all interactions, and seek legal guidance before taking any significant steps. Awareness and preparedness can help you navigate such situations effectively.

Important Considerations

Emotional Readiness: Before taking any step, ensure you are emotionally prepared for the outcomes, whether they lead to reconciliation or not.

Legal Guidance: Consult with a legal professional to understand the implications of filing an RCR or child custody petition.

Patience and Respect: Rebuilding a relationship takes time. Approach the situation with patience and respect for your wife’s feelings and decisions.

More importantly, if your efforts fail or you are slapped with a false 498A case, then don’t consider yourself a “Damad Ji” anymore.

While initiating efforts for reconciliation, never have any expectations, as the law cannot compel a woman to participate in reconciliation or live with you.

Reconciliation is a journey that requires effort, communication, and, at times, external support. By following these steps, you can increase your chances of resolving conflicts and rebuilding your relationship.

This tragic case of Atul Subhash raises urgent concerns about how men’s issues, especially in cases of marital discord, are systemically neglected. When judiciary will wake up, “How Many More Men Must Suffer”

The extensive documentation left by Atul, including a 24-page suicide note and a video, provides a chilling insight into the emotional and financial toll inflicted upon men in prolonged legal battles stemming from personal disputes. The situation highlights several critical issues:

Key Concerns

Abuse of Legal Provisions

Atul’s case underscores the misuse of laws intended to protect women, such as domestic violence and dowry-related laws, which are sometimes exploited to harass men and their families. Multiple false accusations drained him emotionally, financially, and socially.

Judicial System’s Shortcomings:

120 court hearings in two years reflect inefficiencies in the judicial system, where cases drag on endlessly with minimal resolution.

Allegations of corruption, bribery, and insensitivity on the part of judicial officials exacerbate the suffering of individuals like Atul.

Mental Health Neglect

Prolonged legal harassment without institutional support for mental health led Atul to despair. Despite evident distress, his cries for justice were unheard.

Lack of Support Systems for Men

There are inadequate mechanisms to address the grievances of men facing false accusations. We as an NGOs provide limited help, but systemic changes are necessary.

Urgent Questions

How many more men will succumb to despair before the judicial system takes their issues seriously?

Why are there no stringent penalties for filing false cases that ruin lives and families?

Is the judicial system designed to uphold justice, or is it merely enabling one-sided empowerment?

The Kerala High Court’s judgment in Crl. MC No. 9520 of 2024 (Ismail Valumathige v. Union Territory of Lakshadweep) emphasizes on liberal approach while issuing NOC for passport in Matrimonial Dispute.

The court emphasizes on the importance of balancing the rights of the accused with the integrity of ongoing legal proceedings, especially in cases involving matrimonial disputes or trivial offenses.

Key Takeaways:

Liberal Approach for NOC:

The Court held that in cases arising from matrimonial disputes or trivial offenses, the issuance of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) should be liberal to protect the right to livelihood and life of the accused.
The Court recognized that preventing the issuance of a passport might unnecessarily hinder the accused from seeking employment abroad.

Right to Life:

The judgment connects the ability to secure a passport and livelihood abroad to the broader right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.

Serious Offenses:

In cases of murder, rape, and other grave crimes, courts must carefully ensure that the accused will not abscond before granting NOCs. Conditions can be imposed to secure their presence at trial.

Suppression of Facts:

The petitioner was accused of omitting information about a pending criminal case while applying for a passport. The court criticized this suppression but ruled that a fresh application could be considered favorably if filed.

Expedited Trial:

The Court directed the trial court to expedite and resolve the pending case within three months, ensuring both justice and efficiency.

Judicial Balance:

While upholding the petitioner’s right to obtain a passport for livelihood, the Court emphasized the need for cooperation in ongoing investigations and adherence to trial schedules.

This judgment can be seen as a step forward in ensuring that matrimonial disputes do not unduly obstruct an individual’s fundamental rights, provided the accused cooperates with legal processes. It offers hope for fairness in such cases, especially where men are often vulnerable to prolonged litigation and societal bias.
